3rd PLACE WINNER
Anayla Wilson, 9th Grade
Episcopal High School | Houston, TX

There is a whole side to history that people never talk about, and that is why I believe testimony is needed.

Anayla channeled her natural talent as a poet into a movingoutside-the-box video that illustrates the importance of asking the right questions. Not only do we need more boldly honest students speaking their minds in and out of the classroom, but we also want to help students avoid getting bogged down with uncertainty. Anayla sums this up beautifully in her video entry, in which she builds to an inspiring declaration of self-empowerment that rises above the negative background noise of hate to embrace the positivity of truth shining through.

THE PROJECT:
No Longer Silent”

I realized how important it is to speak about past experiences. If someone were to never speak on an issue, no one would ever know.

Using simple, smart video editing techniques to bring to life her personal testimony, Anayla gives the viewer profound insight into her own mind, as well as the mindset of those people she has encountered in life who may be unconsciously harboring hate. Watch the video here.

THE INSPIRATION:
Phansy Peang | Survivor’s Testimony of the Cambodian Genocide

I like to speak to others, and share my experiences in life to enlighten others.

Listening to Phansy Peang’s heart-wrenching story as a survivor of the Cambodian Genocide was the first time that Anayla had ever learned of this tragic chapter in history. But hearing the sheer humanity that screams out in every word of Phansy Peang’s testimony was enough to demonstrate the amazing power that spoken truth has, and the crucial responsibility we all have to speak up. Anayla’s video honors the courage of survivors like Phansy Peang, whose fearless testimony evokes a genuine compassion that is capable of rooting out hate in whoever hears it.

Congratulations to Anayla Wilson on her amazing challenge entry, from everyone at Teaching with Testimony and Discovery Education. Keep speaking your truth and sharing your talents with the world!
