Four dead after migrant boat sinks near Dunkirk

At least four people, including two children, have died after their boat capsized during an attempted crossing of the English Channel, French officials confirmed Tuesday.

The boat was reported as being in distress earlier in the day near the French port of Dunkirk. Fifteen others have been saved so far, with a search and rescue operation still ongoing.

Among the dead were an adult man and women, and two children, aged five and eight.

U.K. Home Secretary Priti Patel expressed her sadness at the “tragic loss of life” and confirmed that the U.K. had offered France their support in the future investigation into the boat’s sinking.

In her statement, she also said the news “highlights the dangers that come with crossing the Channel.”

She added: “I will do everything I can to stop callous criminals exploiting vulnerable people.”

Patel has previously vowed to make the English Channel “unviable” for migrant crossings, after a surge in the number of people making the crossing. She has also urged French government to “take more urgent and productive action to patrol the French coastline” in order to prevent the crossings.

A record 1,500 migrants crossed the Channel using small boats in August.
